Mentoring Service in Virginia

 

PURPOSE & MISSION

This program is designed to match identified at risk youths in our area with enthusiastic, dedicated, caring adult members of our community. The purpose of this match is to provide at risk youths with a stable adult mentoring relationship. This mentor will provide friendship, encouragement, and support through the various childhood/adolescence life transitions. The mentor will encourage autonomy, assist the youth in learning decision making skills, increasing independence, and offering unconditional positive regard. The goal of this relationship is to create a long lasting relationship. Emphasis of this program is relationship building. This program embraces fun and interactive activities to improve youth’s self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and community relationships; thus improving their quality of life.

LOCATION OF SERVICES

Services will be held in the Charlottesville community. The New Y-CAPP office is located at 2307 Commonwealth Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Contact information: Ph: 434-973-0176 Fax: 434-973-0234. Parents of mentees will also be provided with contact information for mentor and mentoring supervisor.

HOURS OF OPERATION

The New Y-CAPP Mentoring Program hours are Monday through Friday. Some mentors may chose to make weekend visits. Times will vary and will be agreed upon by mentor, mentee, and parent. The program will not operate on National Holidays such as the 4th of July, etc.

ADMISSION & REFERRAL PROCESS

With partnerships with Charlottesville City and Albemarle County CSA, participants will be identified per CSA committee. Interested parents are required to complete an enrollment form. All forms must be fully completed upon rendered services (Consent & Permission to Transport, Emergency Medical Consent, Health Information, Releases of Information- school, PCP, mental health providers, Emergency Contact, etc.).
